JAKOB BRAGG

Version 2

Jakob Bragg (b. 1990) is an Australian composer who writes detailed and volatile works; one where ornamentation and microtonality are informed by modernist and cross-cultural languages alike. His works have been performed across Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America by artists such as Quatuor Tana (FR), Meitar Ensemble (IL), BRON (NL), eventuell.Duo (CH), Amber Evans (US/AU), Kupka’s Piano (with whom he is an associate artist), Ensemble Offspring, Syzygy Ensemble, Kurilpa String Quartet, The Song Company, Horsley & Williams Duo, Alex Raineri, Phoebe Green, Ben Opie, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra, and Queensland Philharmonia. Jakob has participated in composer development programmes such as the 49thDarmstadt Summer Course for New Music (DE), Impuls Academie (AT), Académie Voix Nouvelles Royaumont (FR), International Masterclass Shanghai New Music Week, and within Australia at the TSO Composers’ School, Hatched Academy, the Tilde Festival Academy, and AYO’s National Music Camp. He completed his Masters of Music at the University of Melbourne (MCM) in 2018 with Elliott Gyger, and has previously studied with Liza Lim, and Gerard Brophy (at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University). Other composition mentors have included Enno Poppe, Simon Steen-Anderson, Wieland Hoban, Pierluigi Billone, Rebecca Saunders, Philippe Hurel, Noriko Baba, and Mauro Lanza.

UNRAVELLING GRAPHITE“ FOR STRING QUARTET (2014 – 2016) PROGRAM NOTES

Unravelling Graphite is a slowly evolving spectrum. One which is derived from an underlying pitch trajectory that attempts, and often fails, to unify each of the four individual instruments. Composed over quite a long period of time, this work was constantly in a state of editing, re-working, refining, and revisiting. The outcome has been material which is morphed and twisted, quickly collapsing, slowly rebuilt, and one forevermore transformed.
